The Other Side

Tonight I got my first glimpse of the other side of Domestic Violence-The Offenders! My internship for the last few weeks I have until I'm finished at Chrysalis will be working with (in groups) the court mandated DV offenders.

While I didn't know what to expect I think after attending both a women's offender group and a men's offender group that I will learn a lot in the next few weeks!

It is hard to hear the horror stories of DV victims.

It is hard to hear the horror stories of DV offenders.

I am learning so much about DV that I never knew, the affects it has on all it entrenches in it's grasp, and so much about myself as a person and as a therapist.

That sounds really intense Kylee- but I guess that it is good to hear both sides of the experience.

Wow, you really are getting an experience few people have. I hope it goes well for you!

That's interesting. I think I would have such negative opinions, it'd be hard for me to open up and listen to their stories. But I'm glad you are in a learning environment. I would be interested in learning about both sides. Good luck!

Seriously, it is soooo interesting. I do Violence Against Women Cases (VAWA) and love learning about DV. The thing that I find most interesting is that the offenders are usually so insecure. They often come from abusive homes. Such a cycle and the patterns...over and over and over the patterns of behavior are so similar.
